Purity in Parody: Why You Won’t See a Lamborghini in GTA 6
It’s a tempting thought for any advertiser: placing a real-world brand in the middle of what is arguably the most anticipated entertainment launch in history. However, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has officially shut down any hopes (or fears) of real-world product placement in Grand Theft Auto VI.
Speaking at the iicon event in Las Vegas in late April 2026, Zelnick emphasized that the “purity” of the GTA universe depends on it remaining entirely fictional.
1. “Staying Pure”: The CEO’s Logic
Zelnick’s stance isn’t just about tradition; it’s about protecting the “intellectual property” and the trust of the consumers.

A Fictional World: Zelnick stated, “It’s a fictional world and everything in it is fictional. So we’re not even at risk of doing brand partnerships because all the brands are made up.”

The Satire Factor: The heart of GTA has always been its biting satire of American culture. If a real brand like Facebook or Ford paid to be in the game, Rockstar would lose the freedom to make fun of them. You can’t have a mission mocking a CEO if that CEO’s company is paying your bills.
2. Parody Brands vs. Real World
GTA has built a massive “lore” of fake brands that fans have come to love just as much as real ones.

Zelnick also addressed the growing trend of “interstitial” ads (ads that pop up during gameplay) in $70–$80 titles.

The Exception: While Take-Two’s NBA 2K features real brands, Zelnick argues that is because those brands actually exist in real-world basketball arenas, making them “authentic” to that specific sim—something that doesn’t apply to the satirical world of Vice City.

Even with over 225 million copies of GTA V sold, Zelnick admitted he is “scared” about the upcoming release.
