The “Relid” Revolution: Aluminum Cans Finally Get a Resealable Lid
In a major move for sustainable packaging, L.A. Libations—the powerhouse beverage incubator—partnered with Re:Lid USA to launch the industry’s first fully recyclable, resealable aluminum lid. Debuted at The Beverage Forum in late April 2026, this technology is being touted as the “missing link” that gives aluminum cans the convenience of plastic bottles without the environmental footprint.
1. How the Re:Lid Works
The design solves the age-old problem of the “open once” nature of standard cans.
-
The Mechanism: It looks like a standard pop-top but features a patented sliding mechanism. After the initial “crack,” you can slide the tab back to reveal the opening and slide it forward to seal it shut.
-
The “Tactile Click”: The lid locks into place with a physical click, ensuring it is leak-proof and protects the drink from debris or losing carbonation.
-
Multi-Use: The closure is designed to be resealed up to 14 times, making it perfect for on-the-go consumption over several hours.
2. The Sustainability Edge
Unlike previous attempts at resealable cans that used heavy plastic twist-tops, the Re:Lid is almost entirely aluminum.
-
99% Aluminum: The only non-metal part is a tiny 0.2 grams of thermoplastic elastomer (sealant).
-
Recyclability: Because the plastic content is so low, it is classified as an all-aluminum container. It can go straight into standard recycling bins without needing to be disassembled.
-
Plastic-Free Alternative: This directly targets the plastic bottle market, especially in California, where new legislation is phasing out single-use plastics.
3. Market Launch: Gelson’s Markets
The first product to use this technology is a new L.A. Libations Spring Water, sourced from Palomar Mountain.
-
Exclusive Launch: Initially available at all 27 Gelson’s Markets locations in Southern California starting May 2026.
-
Cost Factor: Re:Lid USA claims the lid is significantly cheaper than producing “aluminum bottles” (the screw-top metal cans used by brands like Pathwater), making it a viable option for mass-market soda and beer brands.
